Adani Cement’s cement and building materials companies, Ambuja Cements and ACC Limited, have proactively undertaken multiple award-winning water conservation initiatives over the past two decades to address the issue of water scarcity in India. Ambuja Cements and ACC through their CSR initiatives aim to create awareness and educate communities on better ways to use water sustainably for agriculture. Both companies also ensure the availability of clean drinking water for daily household consumption in their communities and have implemented various rainwater harvesting projects over many years.
Companies actively prevent the use of fresh water by optimizing their processes and promoting water conservation, collection and recycling within their operations and expanding water collection structures in communities.
Mr. Ajay Kapoor, CEO, Cement Business said, “As a responsible corporate citizen and nation builder, sustainability is at the core of our business and water resource development is one of our key focus areas. We are committed to improving community life by addressing their vital needs, such as access to water, through our many conservation initiatives, which align with our broader philosophy of building prosperity for communities with kindness.”
Globally, Ambuja Cements is the only cement producer to be recognized for its leadership in water security in the CDP 2021 with a top ‘A’ score. These initiatives have received many more accolades like ICC Social Impact Award, National Water Mission Award, 11th National Award and FICCI Award among others. Over the past one year, Ambuja Cements in collaboration with ATE Chandra Foundation have rejuvenated traditional water bodies in Pali district of Rajasthan and Chandrapur district of Vidharbha region of Maharashtra just in time for the annual monsoon season. Through these efforts, 166 million liters of additional water storage capacity is being created by dewatering municipal ponds in 50 villages.
ACC in Biryahi village, part of Jamthal Gram Panchayat, Gagal, Himachal Pradesh, supported the community by laying a drinking water pipeline and supplying 120 liters per person per day – significantly above the village standard of 55 liters per person per day at Jal Jeevan Mission . In October 2022, ACC laid 1,000 meters of pipes to supply water to approximately 150 people. ACC has consistently made collaborative efforts to improve water availability in rural communities. ACC’s WASH is an initiative that focuses on providing water for drinking, sanitation and hygiene purposes to communities in rural India. It also aims to rejuvenate, restore and create new water resources.
Today, both Ambuja Cement and ACC are water-positive companies that give back to society. ACC is 2x water positive and committed to increase 5x by 2030. While Ambuja Cement has already set benchmarks by becoming the only cement company to achieve 8x water positive.
