The Election Commission of India (ECI) has detected 2.6 lakh duplicate entries in 16 assembly constituencies of Chennai.
The Chennai District Election Office is expected to start the verification process to delete duplicate entries in a few months. The total number of voters in the 16 assembly constituencies of Chennai is estimated at 38.83 lakh.
Last year, the ECI detected 3.2 lakh duplicate entries in the city. At that time, as many as 2 lakh duplicate voter entries were removed in Chennai. Over the past two years, the ECI has been using the software to carry out large-scale deletion of duplicate entries in all the constituencies in the country.
According to data collected by ECI-developed software, the highest number of duplicate entries in the electoral rolls in Chennai was found in Velachery assembly constituency. Out of 3.05 lakh voters in Velachery assembly constituency, there are a total of 24,414 names of voters of duplicate entries.
An estimated half of the 24,414 duplicate entries in the constituency are likely to be removed after verification by officials who will visit each household.
In Virugambakkam assembly constituency, a total of 23,073 duplicate entries of voters out of 2.76 lakh in the rolls were detected. Saidapet Assembly constituency has 19,883 duplicate entries out of 2.66 lakh voters. Anna Nagar Assembly constituency has 19506 duplicate entries of 2.72 lakh voters. Harbor Assembly Constituency has the least number of duplicate entries. A total of 10,082 out of 1.72 lakh voters have duplicate entries in the constituency.
ECI software matches facial attributes to identify duplicate entries. Another software developed by ECI uses demographic characteristics to identify duplicate entries, officials said.
