DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — World champions Fiji failed to advance from a tough group with New Zealand and Argentina at the Dubai Sevens on Friday.
In Group B, Argentina beat New Zealand, who beat Fiji, who beat Argentina. Fiji missed out on the quarter-finals by just four points.
Great Britain were even more unlucky in Group A, where they edged out Australia by just two points.
The British beat defending champions South Africa, who beat Australia, who beat the British. Coincidentally, Australia and Great Britain staged late comebacks to draw with Kenya.
Only the United States and France completed the group stage undefeated.
The USA swept Samoa, Canada and Japan, while France faced Ireland, Spain and Uganda.
Saturday’s quarter-finals are Argentina vs. Ireland, United States vs. Australia, France vs. New Zealand and South Africa vs. Samoa.
On the women’s side, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland topped the groups.
