The Greater Chennai Corporation has set a deadline of two days to delimit the boundaries of area sabhas in the city’s 2,000 wards.
A meeting was held at Ripon Buildings to sensitize councilors and zonal presidents on various aspects of zonal sabhas and ward committees to improve civic participation of residents in the city.
The civic body has asked all the 15 zonal officials to complete the final work to demarcate the boundaries of 2,000 zones within two days. “The zonal officials will mark the boundaries of the zonal sabhas and within two days finalize the names of the streets to be included in each of the 2,000 zones,” the official said.
In case of any objections from residents, the corporation will change the boundaries of 2000 sabha constituencies. The areas will be mapped, numbered and sent to the Chennai District Collector for official notification.
After the notification, the company will nominate one beneficiary from among the persons entered in the electoral registers, which refer to the individual area of the district, as a member of the district committee. On the basis of the proposal of the council, the executive body obtains the readiness of the candidates in the prescribed form.
After checking the data submitted by the candidates, the list of all eligible candidates will be submitted to the Company Council for approval at the next meeting. Once the GCC Council approves the appointments, the executive body will issue a statement of appointment to the candidates. If a person who does not meet the requirements is appointed as a ward committee member, the executive body will request a new appointment from the council. The first zonal sabha meetings are likely to be held on January 26.
