A trial export consignment of GI tagged Khasi mandarin orange from Meghalaya left for Dubai yesterday. The project is part of its initiatives to promote exports of agricultural products labeled with geographical indications (GI) of local origin,

India’s federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry has taken the initiative through its apex agricultural export promotion body, the Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA). The trial shipment started with one tonne of organic citrus from an agricultural production company based in Jirang in Ri Bhoi district. Khasi mandarin oranges are grown under the Organic Value Chain Development Mission for the North-East Region, which is a submission of the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture.

The send-off was flagged off by Agriculture Secretary S. Sadhu, Government of Meghalaya, while APEDA President M. Angamuthu virtually addressed the meeting and insisted on making the northern region -it is an export center for organic products.
