The American Hospital Dubai, a regional leader in medical excellence, set another benchmark in complex and minimally invasive treatments by successfully performing brain surgery on a patient diagnosed with a large and potentially lethal aneurysm.
Dr. Parviz Dolati, a board-certified neurosurgeon with multiple clinical fellowships in North America, including Harvard Medical School, and 26 years of experience in brain and spine surgery, performed the challenging operation . Dr. Dolati treats more than 200-300 major brain and spine cases each year, managing more than 30,000 outpatient cases in university and private clinics and hospitals.
“The patient had a very large aneurysm in the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery in her brain,” explains Dr. Dolati. “Therefore, we applied the latest technology in minimally invasive treatments to access the aneurysm without making an incision in the skull.”
Aneurysms are bulges in the arterial walls due to tissue weakness that become inflamed, putting pressure on the area and carrying the risk of rupture with catastrophic consequences.
The procedure includes endovascular techniques. A microcatheter is inserted through the patient’s femoral artery near the groin to reach the aneurysm. A microcoil is placed inside the aneurysm, attached to the microcatheter, which fills it and induces coagulation. The micro-coils deployed in the aneurysms are nanometer-sized, about one to two times the width of a human hair.
“We just deployed a coil inside the aneurysm. We also deployed a flow-diverting stent at the neck of the aneurysm to redirect blood away from the aneurysm and prevent further expansion.”
Dr. Dolati says flow diverters are especially effective for treating large aneurysms.
“Only three months after the procedure, the aneurysm has completely disappeared; it is cured and the patient is well”.
