LUCKNOW A gang of three women from Chennai, allegedly involved in stealing jewelery and other valuables from people during weddings, was arrested in Lucknow on Thursday.

The arrested women have been identified as Roja, 35, Nandini, 25, and Aarti, 32, according to a press release issued by the police. “These women were active in Lucknow and often attended weddings. They used to dress up nicely to blend in with the crowd and be friendly with other women. Looking for the right opportunity, they would steal gold jewellery, handbags and other valuables,” said Aparna Rajat Kaushik, DCP, Central.

On Thursday, the three accused were detained from Ketali Mela in Lucknow’s Jhulelal Park. The police confiscated three gold chains from them. “Based on the complaints, an FIR under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for theft) was registered at the Hasanganj police station on Wednesday. After their arrest, another IPC section — 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) was added to the FIR,” the press release added.

Other members of the gang are also being traced, the DCP added.
