CHENNAI: Tiruvallur satellite town, which is among the five satellite town proposals floated in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, could be developed into a knowledge and research hub, according to sources.
This comes after the state had earlier proposed Periyapalayam as a city of knowledge. According to sources, the knowledge city, the first of its kind in the country, would benefit around one lakh people. The land plots are in the process of identification, after which TIDCO will call for registration of interest.
Meanwhile, the satellite town of Tiruvallur will cover an area of 37.74 square kilometers and will be spread over 11 villages. Sources are said to analyze the suitability of the site, consider 11 taluks. These include Ambattur, Avadi, Gummidipoondi, Madhavaram, Maduravoyal, Ponneri, Poonamallee, Tiruvottiyur, Thiruvallur, Tirutanni and Uthukottai.
A total of 11 parameters including elevation, slope, groundwater potential, population density, social dimension, proximity to educational institution, proximity to health facility, road and rail connectivity, ecologically sensitive area, flood susceptibility and percentage of undeveloped land available were considered. .
Similarly, major infrastructure development projects and proposed or dominant job-creating activities have also been considered in the economic analysis. These include the Multimodal Logistics Park at Mappedu, the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, the Integrated Corridor under implementation, the extension of the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway and the development of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor.
