TN Marine Police thwart fertilizer smuggling attempt | Chennai News | News Bharat


MADURAI: The Coastal Security Squad (Maritime) Police in Tamil Nadu on Monday foiled an attempt to smuggle fertilizers to Sri Lanka. They seized 360 kg of fertilizer and detained two people in connection with this.
The maritime police performed vehicle control at Vedalai Beach Road in Ramanathapuram district. They intercepted the SUV, searched it and found 30 bottles with a capacity of 12 liters. The cans were filled with powdered fertilizer.
They detained two passengers in the SUV. The duo has been identified as S Jainudeen and Sarbas Nawaz of Keezhakarai.
During the interrogation, they told the police that they had taken the fertilizer to Vedalai from where he was to be transported to Sri Lanka in a country boat belonging to Sadik Ali of Vedalai.
With the island nation grappling with an economic crisis, smugglers are not limiting their smuggling to conventional drugs or gold, but also to conventional goods, according to police. It’s November 15th Indian Coast Guard arrested 14 people, including four Sri Lankans, for smuggling beedi leaves in a hot pursuit in the Mediterranean.
