Two thieves tricked an Asian investor and his friend with a fake bitcoin scheme and stole nearly $50,000, three phones and documents.
The Criminal Court sent the offenders to prison for three years and ordered their deportation once they were released from prison.
Crime in Dubai
According to recent coverage, the assault took place last July in the Mankhool area of Dubai. Then an undisclosed individual and his friend decided to invest in bitcoins and found a dodgy promoter to help them.
After calling him, the broker came to one of the investor’s homes and asked to see the cash value of the cryptocurrencies the victims wanted to buy. He then promised to come back with someone else who would sell them BTC in 15 minutes.
The buyers were waiting at the residence when minutes later, they heard a knock on the door, and two perpetrators entered the house. They assaulted the victims and stole the bag, which contained 183,000 dirhams (about $50,000), three mobile phones, bank checks and documents. They even threatened to kill one of the investors.
Local law enforcement officers opened an investigation and arrested the criminals. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced them to serve three years in prison and fined them for the amount of the stolen money. Authorities also ordered the deportation of lawbreakers once they were released from prison.
The case of Tuenti’s founder
Zaryn Dentzel, an American computer scientist and founder of Tuenti Technologies, suffered a similar assault last year. Five criminals attacked him at his home in Madrid and tortured him into revealing the password that contained his bitcoins.
The perpetrators tied up Dentzel and allegedly beat him for hours. The victim didn’t give them the private keys until they started hacking and even electroshocking him.
The American later revealed that he had “millions of euros” worth of bitcoins. Apart from the crypto storage, the criminals stole phones, laptops and tablets before fleeing.
“After clearing the tracks, including spraying the victims with cleaning products, they separately left the residence they had entered during the time the janitor was out for lunch,” the report said.
It took almost a year for the Spanish National Police to finally arrest some of the suspects in the crime. Law enforcement officers arrested A month ago three men and a woman who are supposed to be emigrants from Eastern Europe.
